The Republic of Serbia
Embassy in Japan and Painter Маријана Андрић (Marijana ANDJELIC)
Now that we’ve
written about the Serbian Cuisine Workshop, let’s see the exhibition hosted by
the Serbian Embassy in Japan in showroom 101-b of the East building.
Traditional folk art,
costumes and educational brochures are all readily available for perusal.
This is Naïve Art.
Naïve means pure, in a sense, and this
style of art generally depicts fanciful scenes from day-to-day life.
Kovačica Village is particularly famous for Naïve Art. The villagers are also the
artists!
And no one there has been
professionally trained; they are all self-taught!
There is also this original painting by artist Marijana ANDJELIC.
She recreates Serbian landscapes in the style of
traditional Japanese paintings!
She is currently pursuing her Masters degree at the
National University of Fine Arts and Music in Japan.
She has three works on
display, and this one is entitled “The Flow of Legend”.
The motif is the tower of a
monastery in Serbia, which is also a World Heritage Site.
It inspires a true swelling
of emotion when viewed in person, but does that translate effectively through
the pictures alone?
It’s thrilling to look upon
it and be able to decipher the materials that have been used; the natural mineral
pigments and particles.
As your gaze lowers, you can
see characters written in the Serbian language: it’s an old Serbian legend.
Just as it is said, “Though a country be
sundered, hills and rivers endure”, wild chrysanthemums rise up from below.
The wonderment of the work (the natural
minerals used for pigmentation and the mosaic) just cannot be properly
communicated through the pictures here!
The artist herself is very often here, and
I strongly recommend coming to speak with her in person.
There are two other works by
two other Serbian artists also on display, though the artists themselves are
not in Japan.
This is by photographer Milica NIKOLIC: a flooded tennis court in Serbia. It is shocking how sharply you can
feel the photographer’s acute sensibility.
This is a painting by artist
Milena MILOSAVLJEVIC with beautifully simple colors and composition, which very
effectively portrays its creator’s artistic sense.
Its presence significantly brings
up the standard of the entire room.
The exhibition will continue
until Tuesday the 9th.
